3D Reverse Engineering: Convert mesh to surface in Rhino:

  • Import any mesh from scan into Rhinoceros environment. The mesh has to have topology so the format of the file should be PLY, OBJ or STL. STL is the most common file format used in 3D Scanning
  • You may edit the mesh in Rhino, but it is not mandatory. The mesh may be not perfect and even with holes. Select the mesh and then select Mesh2Surface \ Shapes...
  • The mesh will appear in Mesh2Surface working environment. Use navigations to rotate as in Rhinoceros environment
  • Use the selection tools to mark the features like planes, cylinders, spheres, free form patches, revolved and extruded surfaces
  • Extract the shapes by selecting what type of feature needs to be fit.
  • Use 3D Sketch if needed to draw curves directly on the mesh.
  • Select the curves and create CurveNetwork, Loft, Sweep 1, Sweep 2 or Blend surfaces
  • Use colour deviation map to control the difference from created surfaces to scanned mesh. The colour map is calculated instantly in real-time and helps the user to adjust surfaces so they fit the best to the scanned data
  • Press Create in Rhino button to get the shapes into Rhinoceros software as surfaces.
  • Use Rhinoceros Trim command to create the bodies. Optionaly add fillets where needed.
